Hard-hollering rock god Robert Plant and crystalline-voiced bluegrass sweetheart Alison Krauss may strike you as an unlikely pairing for a low-key singalong, but producer T-Bone Burnett had a hunch it might work. Before Plant hooked up with Led Zeppelin, he was up to his curly locks in faerie folk with Band of Holy Joy, and Krauss can harmonize with a creaky door. The only problem is that they have absolutely no chemistry. Zilch.
So even though Burnett has assembled a crack acoustic support unit to play the choice material he's selected from Gene Clark, Townes Van Zandt and the Everly Brothers, without that magical X factor you've got nothing but two good vocalists trying to stay out of each other's way.
