After having successfully navigated through a series of high-concept projects that chased trends, trumpeter Roy Hargrove steps off the treadmill to put in some quality studio time with his road band. The joyful relief is apparent all through Earfood.
There are no formulas to follow, no legendary figures to impress, no big string sections, no overly familiar standards and no cameos by guest rappers or out-?of-?work turntablists. What you hear instead is Roy having the time of his life with some close friends, playing the unabashedly melodic music they love for the sheer pleasure of the shared creative experience. There’s nothing complex here; this is stuff you just feel.
The Roy Hargrove Quintet get busy at Nathan Phillips Square tonight (Thursday, June 26).
