Following k.d. lang’s lead, Canrock icons Rush take a songwriting break by covering songs that served as early inspiration. Like lang, Rush aren’t really interested in investing the energy and creativity required to reinvent the tunes. It would’ve been great to hear them redo the music of the Yardbirds, Buffalo Springfield and Love 2112-style, but instead they just plod through bar band versions of these ho-hum AM radio hits. It’s also too bad that they couldn’t find a song by any one of the great Toronto-based groups that paved the way for them. Surely, they must’ve come across the Ugly Ducklings, Luke and the Apostles or the Paupers…. Maybe not.
