Saigon

Warning Shots 2 (E1/Amalgam)

Rating: NN

You have to admire Saigon. Despite a botched acting career, album delays and a go-nowhere Internet beef with Joe Budden, he still carries himself with a delusional amount of bravado.

Although Warning Shots 2 is palatable, his frequent “best rapper alive” claims and self-comparisons to Nas, Biggie and Jay-Z are laughable. Sai’s lyrics hit the mark on Nothing Comes Easy and Aye Aye Aye, but it’s clear his creativity peaked years ago. For Some Pussy is an embarrassment.

The production is equally hit or miss. Just Blaze, Buckwild and Scram Jones lay down NYC-ready heat, but there are more than a few throwaway beats, particularly on the Mafioso-produced Cookies & Milk, a blatant rip-off of Lil Wayne’s Lollipop. Here’s hoping he dials in his sound for 2010’s The Greatest Story Never Told.
