Sal Principato

AWA BAND FEAT. TONY ALLEN

Bababatteur

“This features Tony Allen, drummer for the late great Fela Kuti and the man responsible for much of what’s considered the Afrobeat sound. This record does it for me in terms of atmospherics on the dance floor. I like the French version the best, as I don’t really understand French: as in any music sung in a language besides English, I imagine the lyrics to be profound and sensual.”

DFA

Remixes Chapter One

“An updated version of everything I’ve traditionally loved about the NYC music scene, DFA’s sound is eclectic, playful, intense and somewhat organic. Their pick of tunes makes me think, ‘I wish I’d done that!’ Every track is interesting, danceable or at least curious.”

JOHNNY CASH

The Essential Johnny Cash

“After you’ve had your fill of the detached irony and faux sensuality of modernist music, get with the real thing. I’m either slapping my knee, getting tearful or stewing in a righteous rage when I hear these tunes. What I like about a lot of North American roots music is that it’s pure and naively honest on the one hand, but also radical and edgy on the other.”
