At one time, singer/songwriter Andrew Haughton had a lot riding on him. At the age of 11 he was discovered by local manager and concert promoter Gary Topp, who called the Powassan, Ontario, native a “hitmaker.” Years later, Haughton has the chance to prove he has what it takes. His band, Say Ah!, recently released their first disc, and, unfortunately, Haughton’s still trying to find his place in the music biz. Most of the songs are a schizophrenic mix of indie and radio-friendly rock, with a bit of jazz thrown in. The few good moments are outweighed by the unfortunate U2 rip-offs, and the weak recording quality doesn’t help. Haughton’s definitely got something, but for now it’s not hits. Louder guitars, original melodies and a less amateurish sound would be steps in the right direction.
Say Ah! play Ciao Edie Friday (December 1).
