SCHOOL OF LANGUAGE

Rating: NNN

Indie tears were shed when Field Music announced they wouldn’t be a band for a while after touring behind last year’s Tones Of Town. It may be small consolation, but David Brewis has his new School of Language laptop project which involves vocal contributions from his pals in Sunderland’s other band, the Futureheads, whose career aspiration of being nearly as good Franz Ferdinand hasn’t really paid dividends.

The good news for Field Music fans is that even though Sea From Shore is largely a cut ’n’ paste experiment, the results aren’t terribly different from Field Music’s studio work. A little more self-consciously weird and angular maybe, but never straying too far from the jerky new wave inpiration of the group Brewis co-founded with brother Peter. On the downside, for all the meticulous work Brewis put into the construction of each track, he lacks the compositional skill required to turn them into memorable songs.

School Of Language hits Sneaky Dee’s Wednesday (March 12).
