Since 2001, when Scout Niblett released her first record, people have been drawn to her odd warble and hushed, minimalist tunes. She's produced gems over the years, but she's had her fair share of bombs, too. Her latest is another mix of great tracks and eye-rolling throwaways. Unfortunately, the latter outnumber the former.
Niblett's at her best singing alongside Will Oldham, especially on the first couple of tracks. Together, their eclectic, slightly out-of-tune voices create a dreamy, haunting aesthetic that begs to be heard. But a few songs in, Niblett goes a little nuts. Your Last Chariot is grating, to say the least; it sounds like the work of a wasted amateur musician recording her first demo. From there on, it's back and forth.
