Sebastien Tellier – My God Is Blue

Rating: N

I’m calling bullshit on everyone who gave Sébastien Tellier’s new album a positive review when it came out in Europe last year. I guarantee none of those critics have listened to it since writing about it, other than maybe to blast it in order to annoy their roommates. Sure, I can appreciate the humour of Tellier’s campy soft-rock superstar persona, but there’s nothing musically redeemable about My God Is Blue.

Upbeat single Cochon Ville is a serviceable slab of disco pop cheese, but it’s still just an imitation of the worst aspects of that genre. The rest of the album features plodding, hookless synth ballads reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg’s most embarrassing moments. Even if you’re listening to this purely for shits and giggles, hasn’t the joke gotten tired four albums into the Parisian musician’s career?

What’s even more mind-boggling is the praise Tellier’s feeble singing voice is garnering. Maybe years of listening to tuneless indie rock singers have lowered the bar so far that perspective has been lost.
