Secret Broadcast

Rating: NN

An initial listen to Secret Broadcast’s debut full-length reveals the band’s penchant for writing Coldplayesque verses and Oasisish choruses. Nods to 90s Brit-rock acts Doves, Supergrass, the Verve and Radiohead can be heard on further listens.

But the tightly polished three-piece is actually from Calgary, and the album was recorded in 2009, not 1995. Despite some memorable hooks and well-crafted tunes, Secret Broadcast come off as master mimics. And the fact that the project’s most contemporary point of reference is the Strokes tells you how dated it all sounds.
