Seed Is..., an eight-member Canadian blues-funk-rap-soul powerhouse, soar several times on this album, especially when all their diverse influences collide. Check the bridges of P.O.P., for example, in which saxophones sail off heavy metal riffs, bound by a vital bass line and Alexis Brown's power-diva vocals. They also demonstrate their own aesthetic when they go all left-field freaky on the spacey, congafied Boardwalk Interlude or bring in some Fatman Scoop-style ad libs throughout. On Music For The Masses, risky innovations like these pay off.
Seed Is... play the Trane Studio Friday (August 18).
