Seis Pistos of Chihuahua, Mexico, have been called the Latin Ramones or the Latin Sex Pistols, but they’re not that boring or derivative. An old-school punk base melds with more recent inspiration, building on a solid rhythm section that shows potential for complexity. Hardcore galloping guitars and freak-outs at times bounce off more exotic world and reggae elements, experimenting only within the boundaries of the punk rock framework. Often, Latin punk comes with a heavy political edge à la Todos Tus Muertos or Fermin Muguruza, and it’s hard to tell how socially invested these rambunctious little dudes are. There is something about the “white man” saying something, but I didn’t catch what it was.
Seis Pistos play as part of CMW Friday (March 3) at the Bovine.
