Semi Precious Weapons

Rating: N

I hear an almost-hook in lead single Magnetic Baby – and I almost like it. Too bad that’s as good as it gets for Brooklyn fashonistas Semi Precious Weapons on their mostly terrible debut, We Love You.

Stealing 90 per cent of their guitar work from early 90s grunge rock, the Semis also suffer from lead singer Justin Tranter’s whiny, pretentious petulance. Basically he’s a cross between Chris Crocker (the “Leave Britney alone!” guy from YouTube) and a more annoying, self-obsessed version of Placebo’s Brian Molko. WLY has a few, fleeting good moments, but they’re like finding a five-dollar bill in a pile of puke.

Top Track: Magnetic Baby

Semi Precious Weapons unload at the Velvet Underground on Saturday (November 29).
