Sepultura

Rating: NN

Substantial lineup changes to the once highly influential band have left so little of its former self intact that calling the band Sepultura is a bit of a misnomer. That said, the ambitious A-Lex album, based conceptually on Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange, is admirable if long-winded.

Stylistically it’s a mixed bag, culling elements of everything from thrash to groove and nu-metal. It occasionally delivers on quick, no-frills thrashers like Moloko Mesto and closer Paradox, but too many same-sounding, forgettable moments (offset, naturally, by a ridiculous fully orchestrated cheese-metal take on Beethoven’s Ninth) and disappointingly bland lyrics make this a lesser entry from a band that may have run its course.
