SEX MOB

SEX MOB Dime Grind Palace (Rope-a-Dope) Rating: NNNN

Rating: NNNN

Celebrated New York-based slide trumpet player Steven Bernstein’s Sex Mob project aims to fuse the excitement of experimental free jazz with good old party music – funk, Dixieland, hiphop and even a bit of dub. Ignore the tacky cartoons on the cover and pick this up. It’s like Tom Waits’s stumbling weirdness fused with Pharoah Sanders’s interstellar explorations filtered through the psychedelic funk of early George Clinton bands. If you’ve already been following the Sex Mob, this album features more original material by Bernstein than ever before, and also sees legendary trombone player Roswell Rudd (whose explorations of slide trombone in free jazz inspired Bernstein to start the Sex Mob seven years ago) on more than half the songs.
