Last time I checked, London, Ontario, wasn't regarded as a hotbed of hiphop innovation, but conscious rhymer Shadrach Kabango, aka Shad (seems like MC Kabango! would've been the way to go, but, hey, it's his career) could inspire a reassessment of the province's west side. Shad's put the $17,500 prize money he picked up in The Beat 91.5 FM's Rhythm Of The Future talent competition to good use producing a head-turning debut in When This Is Over. There's no hiding the De La Soul and Tribe inspiration here, as Digs, beatmaker Dert (of Tunnel Rat infamy) and Relic the Oddity deliver the unconventional thump over which our man Shad uncoils image-rich ponderances on the state of the world, punctuated with pointed punchlines. When This Is Over sounds like the start of something big. Watch Shad tear up the El Mocambo Friday (February 3).
