Shalabi Effect play the Drake Tuesday (November 22). Rating: NNNN
If you're not a person who listens to experimental or psychedelic music, Shalabi Effect might challenge your very definition of music. Recorded live during a May art festival in Montreal, Unfortunately winds through a fantastic landscape of white noise, distortion and found sound, meandering in and out of more traditional musical breaks incorporating soft guitar, tabla, wavery harmonica and haunting whistling. At times, it reminds me of the old spooky soundtrack tape my father used to broadcast outside our house on Halloween, and it sets a similar dark mood. This is an intriguing miniature journey and a good introduction to offbeat musical forms for the uninitiated.
