I never had the archetypal 'cool aunt' figure in my life -- y'know, the hip hatchback-driving one who dated guys like John Corbett and got high at a Hootie and the Blowfish show in 97. If she did exist, I imagine she'd be all up on Canadian super-trio Shaye, cuz they play what can only be called 'aunt rock.' The trio of Damhnait Doyle, Tara MacLean and Kim Stockwood deliver what you'd expect; glossy, overproduced folky soft rock and decent harmonizing, especially on the sombre Ocean Of Sorrows. They're not at all bad but never sound like they're taking any real risks, which should make it a predictable but satisfying listen for fans.
Shaye play Nathan Phillips Square Saturday (February 3).
