Behind SOOOO's electric fence of relic Casios, samplers, sequencers and HAL 9000 vocoder voices sits the thumping beat of a humanoid heart. Not content to write another nine interpretations of One More Time, the E-town sextet have found a nice compromise between their space disco ambitions and songs that actually resonate beyond their dance-floor intentions. Band chieftain Nik 7 robotically ruminates about nefarious creditors on Forever Indebted and sheds steely tears for a city under condo siege in They Tear Down Houses Don't They? Their live show's punk energy is effectively captured on NS/JS, with bassist Wolfskin's buzzing bass high in the mix and the double drummer attack hitting hard. It all comes together in an extremely danceable confluence of man and machine. One of the best Canadian releases of the summer.
