Sleeper Set Sail

Rating: NNNN

Between touring with Alexisonfire and their spacey name, you’d expect Sleeper Set Sail to be either a hardcore crew or dreamy popsters. Instead, the Sleepers find a middle ground that sounds both atmospheric and aggressive. Combining ethereal guitars and subdued vocals with repetitive riffs and massive drum breaks, they take listeners on an emo-tional roller coaster through their densely climactic songs. The vocals may be sparse, but they’re both poignant and and effectively restrained so as not to overpower the instrumentation. Unfortunately, Sonic Unyon’s decision to compile new tunes – which lack many of the original qualities that made SSS stand out – alongside older material originally released in 2003 leads to a slightly sloppy collection.

Sleeper Set Sail play the El Mocambo tonight (Thursday, March 3) as part of CMW.
