If you thought you’d never hear the end of it, you were right. Sloan are back with their ninth full-length studio album, which sees the quartet divide and distribute songwriting duties pretty evenly. The result isn’t quite on a par with their best work, but it’s nothing to scoff at either.
After kicking things off with the 70s-tinged riff-rooted Believe In Me, the band immediately moves into breezy, Beatlesesque territory on the catchy Cheap Champagne. The album’s standout tracks include the hooky, bass-driven All I Am Is All You’re Not and the punky blues blast of Emergency 911.
That said, things get a little boring with misses The Dogs, a meandering psychedelic number, and the odd closer Too Many.
Sloan play the Mod Club tonight (Thursday, June 12) at 9 pm.
