From Lateef and Chief Xcel to Oh No and Grand Agent, from MF Doom and Danger Mouse to Jean Grae and 9th Wonder, these days indie rappers and producers are falling in love and birthing lemon-fresh collaboration discs that hark back to the unity and cohesion of classics produced by DJ/MC-format groups like Gangstarr. Felt one-ups the formula by making Murs a third member of Atmosphere, with Ant producing from start to finish. Felt is also a series of comics starring Slug and Murs. (This is actually album #2, to go with comic #2 part 1 was A Tribute To Christina Ricci.) On Ant’s production end, it’s all gravy. There’s not one wack beat on the whole throwdown, and the Rhymesayers/Def Jux connection is cool, too, but about half of Felt is dedicated to their groupie community. Slug and Murs trade annoyingly mushy rhymes mixed with blunt sex lines (“I bet you like to fuck”) that get sickitating after a while.
