This album has turned me around on Slum Village. They never struck me as particularly interesting as MCs or single-makers, even aided by Jay Dilla for a period, but Detroit Deli has solid production and fluidity between the MCs, coupled with good appearances by MC Breed and Kanye West. The latter, though, verges on obnoxious, as he is occasionally wont to. An appearance by Dirt McGirt/Ol’ Dirty Bastard still leaves it up in the air as to whether he’s still got it, but the group’s MCs shine, and the production by West, Dilla and Young RJ never disappoints.
Slum Village play the Docks July 28.
