Smash and Teeny are Toronto-based sound artists Sarah Peebles and Nilan Perera, who are joined on the second CD of this two-disc set by UK sax heavyweight John Butcher. Be prepared - this might be improvised music, but it's not jazz according to traditional standards. It's mainly scratches, squeaks, buzzing high-pitched drones, clicks, wheezing de-tuned mouth organs and ringing metallic clangs, It moves just a bit faster than the average glacier and is sometimes precious. But it's that delicate touch that keeps it from being meaningless noise. The best moments are the collaborations with Butcher, who adds an urgency and emotionalism missing from much of the duo's work.
Smash and Teeny perform with John Butcher Tuesday (May 18) at the Art Gallery of York University .
