Soft Canyon

Soft Canyon Broken Spirit, I Will Mend Your Wings (Alien8) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

A jammy classic rock vibe permeates Soft Canyon’s debut, while the ethereal studio effects bring to mind the magic of David Blaine. Most of the melodiously extravagant tunes on this disc would fit well on a Q107 playlist, although it’s a far more ambitious and better album than Q-fave Kim Mitchell’s recent limp-dong effort, Kimosabe. Does it matter that Soft Canyon includes ex-members of Tricky Woo? I think not. More important is that Broken Spirit, I Will Mend Your Wings is stuffed gordita-like with riffs, harmonies, songs and feelings that bring to mind a more depressed version of the band from Almost Famous, except less famous. Soft Canyon name the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers as influences, but why not the Doors? This band would not exist in its present form were it not for such masterful chansons as Crystal Ship trust me on this one.
