Putting a mediocre knob-twiddler like Don Was in charge of producing a Solomon Burke album seems like a horrible mistake with potentially disastrous results. But with the 64-year-old “king of rock ‘n’ soul” still showing gale-force vocal power on top-notch material provided by his younger fans Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Van Morrison and Dr. John and musical support from a killer session crew that includes guitarist Reggie Young and Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band drummer James Gadson, not even Was could screw this one up if he tried. Burke’s inspirational closing rendition of Hank Williams’s Wealth Won’t Save Your Soul suggests a country album is in order next.
