What's to say about Sonic Youth that hasn't already been rehashed and recycled several times over? They're real good? Mucho importante? Way-y-y influential? With Rather Ripped they continue their slow but remarkable progression that currently finds them, for the most part, dropping old SY standbys such as long experimental noise passages in exchange for a significantly more sedated route. Tracks like Do You Believe In Rapture and Jams Run Free are fine, dreamy examples of the band's ability to write soft, claustrophobic and slightly unnerving jams, while Sleepin Around merges their noisier tendencies with shorter, more direct song structures. Just another stepping stone along the way to wherever they go next.
