Avant-rockers Sonic Youth have definitely paid their dues, and more than anything else, The Destroyed Room oddities set is a neat little bonus for anyone already familiar with them. With short but witty liner notes illuminating the origins of the songs, the collection spans a fairly brief period of the band's career, mostly from the late 90s onward - not a huge window for such a large back catalogue that must hold its fair share of hidden gems. What does surface, though, is the band's jam/improv tendency, especially in the hypnotic track Three-Part Sectional Love Seat and the lengthy noise opener, Fire Engine Dream. Serious fans, however, might be happy enough with the original, unedited version of perennial favourite The Diamond Sea. More for the dedicated convert than the curious.
