Soulfreedom

Soulfreedom (Jazzman) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

For the turntable-deficient and those who haven’t bothered trying to keep up with UK record dealer Gerald “Jazzman” Short’s 7-inch reissue series of frightfully obscure rare groove, freaky sound-library electro-dweedle and hardcore indie funk, the Soulfreedom disc conveniently gathers together the recent breakbeat-heavy highlights. The brilliant Trinikas bumper Remember Me, Barbara Moore’s jazzy scat anthem Hot Heels and sought-after Product Placement banger Milk, by the Basic, are all here in better-than-typical dubbed-from-disc sound. Sure, the notes are vague (“Not much is known blah blah blah…) and there’s some question about whether the original artists are getting paid, but the quality of the tunes is unassailable.P
