SOUND TEAM

Rating: NNNN

I don’t want to sound like a hyperbole monster by suggesting that this or that band is on the verge of something terrific and about to hit the big time. I could be dead wrong. But if all goes well for Austin, Texas’s Sound Team, they could be this year’s Interpol or the Strokes, and remarkably, it would be completely deserved. Even though the band’s been around for only four years, Monster is a record overflowing with an impressively cohesive and mature sound that brings to mind the artsy rock of the Walkmen and a more structured Sonic Youth, with the added bonus that singer Matt Oliver’s infectious raspy delivery sounds kinda like a punk trying his hand at soul music.

Sound Team hit the Horseshoe Monday (July 31).
