Some high-profile opening spots on bills with M.I.A., Beans and Hollertronix have touched off a Spank Rock buzz, no doubt due in part to the lowest-common-denominator appeal of the crew's crunkified classic rock concept. Their idea of irreverently cutting up Beatles, Kinks and David Bowie tunes with sampled dialogue, 80s electro blurpage, Dirty South tweakery and the pussy-obsessed rapping of Spank Rock founder Naeem Juwan is a clever ploy. Unfortunately, Voilà! is undermined by the sloppy mixes of Alex "xxxchange" Epton and Chris Rockswell, which sound like they may have been wearing boxing gloves. There's definite potential here, but our kid Juwan could use some professional help.
Spank Rock, with beats by Philly's Cosmo Baker and Pase Rock of Five Deez fame, rocks the Boat Wednesday (January 11).
