Some people might have seen Cockburn as more of a political activist than a great songwriter, but behind his often scathing sermons was some pretty great music. Speechless should make converts of those who found songs like If I Had A Rocket Launcher a little too in-your-face. Twelve instrumentals culled from his startling back catalogue and three new word-free tunes make up this breathtakingly good set, which covers every human emotion. Cockburn has a way with his guitar that exudes passion and sensitivity and makes you question the need for lyrics at all. It just shows you how much can be said with six strings.
