SPITFIRE

After five years, Spitfire have put an end to their ‘indefinite’ hiatus and, having recruited Norma Jean guitarist Scottie Henry, seem poised to make several dents in the already saturated (and often stale-sounding) quirky metal subgenre affectionately known as metalcore. On Self Help the band members flex every single metalcore muscle in their bodies to deliver a chaotic and violent concoction that will no doubt be compared to… well, gee, every other metalcore band. Luckily for Spitfire, they don’t half-arse it for most of the album and come across as virulently raw and refreshed. They may not be pushing the genre into some fantastic new place, but Self Help is a solid piece of work.
