Sports: The Band

Rating: NNN

Sports: the Band are a local indie outfit specializing in a hipper version of sunny AM radio pop, featuring members of the Carnations, By Divine Right, Polmo Polpo and the Meligrove Band. Lead vocalist Nathan Rekker’s voice has a slightly strained and scratchy quality that’s tempered by syrupy harmonies and lovingly layered textures.

Over the five tracks on this EP, they attempt about as many styles, using drum machines to propel some songs, and acoustic guitar and swirling organs on others. That eclecticism is a bit misleading, however essentially, they’re just dressing up pure pop songs with mostly unnecessary embellishments. Fortunately, the studio touches aren’t too distracting, and the songwriting is undeniably strong.

Top track: Cast Lots

Sports: the Band get sweaty May 2 at the Horseshoe.
