The whole neo-grunge-slash-softcore-metal by not-so-smart-seeming guys who wear their hearts on their sleeve seems like the new roots rock. It comes from the same place, y’know? Chapter V is pretty melodic, and quite well balanced as far as the nu-metal pool goes, although it’s très produced. The heavy guitar stuff doesn’t overshadow or interfere with Aaron Lewis’s plaintively strained vocals or simple lyrics, and there are enough acoustic guitars and soaring filler to make it feel rather non-aggressive.
