Like the big, gooey mass that sucks up everything in its path in the horror movie The Blob, Montreal's rock, punk 'n' roll four-piece has successfully absorbed an extensive list of musical influences: blues, garage, proto-punk, straight-up rock. Yet they've managed to avoid sounding like a cheap rip-off or a collection of contrivances.
Instead, what you get is a punchy batch of sweaty and raw tunes like Yr Punk Rock and closer P.B., a forceful, no-bullshit stomper that comes off like the Strokes fucked up on whiskey and uppers. Loud, brash and full of fire, Cold Burns is an accomplished record from a band that deserves to be heard.
Starvin Hungry play November 8 at the El Mocambo.
