STEREOLAB Chemical Chords (4AD/Beggars Group) Rating: NNN
Somewhere along the way, experimental pop group Stereolab dropped the "experimental" bit and now seem perfectly content to make unpopular pop ditties for an ever-shrinking stratum of sophisticates with a yen for offbeat dinner-party soundtracks.
The light and bouncy Chemical Chords, loaded with charmingly chiming tunes that flow smoothly from one into the next like supermarket Muzak, should fit the background mood elevation bill quite nicely. They've got the formula down now, so you can't sweat the technique, but it would make for a more engaging spin if Stereolab could mess with the equation now and again.
Stereolab hit the Phoenix October 8.
