SUEDE

SUEDE A New Morning (Columbia) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

A New Morning sees dark prince of Britpop Brett Anderson waking up on the right side of the bed. Once drawn to dark romanticism and lush melancholia, this fitter, happier Suede eschews angsty, ambiguous sexuality and the dark corners of the human psyche for shimmery, glammy pop tunes, picking up the chirpy paradigm they set with 96’s Coming Up. From the lead cut, Positivity, which sets the vibe with shiny, keening guitars, treacly Rhodes accents and perky lyrics, even the cloudy tracks on A New Morning soar toward a silver lining. Suede can imagine a world where grunge never existed.
