SUGAR MINOTT

Rating: NNNN

Although perhaps better known for his lover’s rock sweetness, roots reggae great Sugar Minott has always had a deeply spiritual side and can strike with a ruffness. Those looking for the lighter side of Minott would be better off with the Good Thing Going (Heartbeat/Rounder) disc, but if it’s deep natty culture you’re after, this King Son set is a Jah-send. Compiling Minott’s early work with the African Brothers and Tony Tuff backed by the Aggrovators and the Studio One band, King Son delivers choice scorchers like Fight Rasta, Righteous Kingdom, The Struggle and Life Without Money along with six solid, never-previously-issued joints to delight the rootically sussed. A hardcore selection.
