SuperGARAGE

superGARAGE Elvis Was Bigger Than The Beatles (EMI/Sextant) Rating: NN Rating: NN

The EMI debut by local alt-rock faves superGARAGE is fun and crunchy pop music à la Ramones but with a little too much self-conscious irony. I mean, come on — one of their tracks is called All We Need Is Detroit Rock ‘N’ Roll, taking the piss out of the current crop of definite-article it bands. Sigh. The tunes are hooky but lack a distinct enough personality to stand out in the sea of cute boys crankin’ sped-up power pop. The highlight is America U.S.A. O.K. All Right, call-and-answer bubble-gum punk built around a loop of raucously chanting kids. And what gives with the odd Peter Gabriel cover that closes the disc? Weird.
