On her third album, Mercury Prize nominee Susheela Raman continues to create ear-pleasing blues-influenced pop with East Indian influences. Her voice (Raman sings in English, and sometimes Hindi and French) has some breathy qualities similar to Natalie Merchant’s and Dido’s, and she uses it to express syntactically interesting writing over solid music from a range of rarely heard instruments. Clean, safe production ties together a meditative, unusual listen. This is the work of someone trying to do her own thing.
