TALK TO HER

TALK TO HER (Milan) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Those who’ve seen Pedro Almodvar’s Talk To Her know how crucial music is to the Spanish director’s latest film, but the movie’s soundtrack has an appeal that extends well beyond the screen. The disc is worth the price if only for Caetano Veloso’s stark and beautiful cover of the Mexican folk song Cucurrucucú Paloma and Ellis Regina’s and Tom Jobim’s Por Toda A Minha Vida, but it’s the film’s score that’s most surprising here. Arranged by Spanish composer and long-time Almodvar pal Alberto Iglesias, it’s strongly rooted in Spanish folk music, subtle and spiked with elements of flamenco. Even the short bits of incidental music work well off the screen. If nothing else, it just makes you want to see the film again.
