The Almighty Defenders

Rating: NNNN

Directly after their sexy stage antics got them booted off a six-city tour of India back in January, Atlanta psychedelic garage-rockers Black Lips made a beeline to Berlin, where they recorded a colab with like-minded Montreal-transplants King Khan and BBQ.

Apparently in the works over the four years since the bands first toured together, the result, released under the Almighty Defenders banner, is what we’ve come to expect from both parties: incendiary gospel-punk doo-wop done fucking right.

While there aren’t any plans to put this show on the road, the record is worth checking out simply for the raw power and soul it packs into its vintage-feel punch. From the anticipatory energy in I’m Coming Home to their boozy, night-cap riff on the classic Stand By Me 50s progression in Bow Down And Die, there’s a visceral authenticity here that a lot of throwback bands miss.
