The Band The Last Waltz (Rhino/Warner) Rating: NNNNN
More than merely a document of the Band’s final stand, the Last Waltz is a celebration of the influential group’s Canadian and American roots and the rock and roll life they shared with vagabond peers like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton and Van Morrison. When the album version of the 1976 concert was released to coincide with Martin Scorsese’s classic 1978 film, the three-LP set included only about half of the music. This four-disc Last Waltz reissue — remixed and remastered by Robbie Robertson from the original tapes — adds 24 unreleased tracks, notably the Band’s awesome take on The Weight, Young’s cover of Ian Tyson’s Four Strong Winds, Dylan’s Hazel and Muddy Waters’s Caledonia. The performances are remarkably tight and powerful. As farewell’s go, this is the rock equivalent of Ted Williams’s last at-bat home run.
