The Besnard Lakes

the besnard Lakes Volume 1 (Break Glass) Rating: NnN

Rating: NNN

Think brooding guitars and epic soundscapes from Montreal and the godspeed you black emperor! clan immediately springs to mind. This debut by husband-and-wife duo the Besnard Lakes has similarities to the sprawling art rock ensemble, but Volume 1 is a much more concentrated burst of psychedelic noise. With buried harmonies and singsong melodies hidden deep within the mix, this is much more a pop record than the wall of fuzz would suggest. What the Besnard Lakes lack is balance much of Volume 1 is delicately sculpted, but the project seems more a work in progress than a finished item. See how far they’ve come when the Besnard Lakes open for the Unicorns at the Rivoli Friday (November 7).
