Producer/keyboardist Greg Kurstin and singer Inara George, L.A. songwriting duo the Bird and the Bee, probably had the time of their lives recording these Hall and Oates hits. They've delivered faithful, appreciative renditions, but the elephant-in-the-room question is why anyone would cop this disc instead of an H&O best-of.
It's not like Kurstin and George go deep into the catalogue for unheralded gems. They give us the essentials: Maneater, Private Eyes, Kiss On My List. They do add a breezy California quality unique to TBATB's style, but it only diffuses Hall's charged-up Philly soul romanticism. Curiously, they open with the stellar H&O-influenced original Heard It On The Radio. It's far more interesting than their covers of songs that - let's be honest here - really can't be bettered.
