The Black Dahlia Murder

The Black Dahlia Murder Unhallowed (Metal Blade) Rating: N Rating: N

At first I thought this record was a joke or at least contained a marginal attempt at humour. Nope. The Black Dahlia Murder (named for the brutal unsolved L.A. slaying) play spooky death metal with lightning-fast guitars and two of the most annoying vocalists I’ve ever heard. One sounds like a hyperactive minion of Satan and the other a slow, dopey one. You can’t hear a word they say, but as with every artiste who fancies himself prolific and poetic, the lyrics are available in the sleeve notes. I wonder how their moms feel about that “We are the children of the beast” line. Their tunes have names like Funeral Thirst, When The Last Grave Has Emptied and Hymn For The Wretched, and they all sound pretty much the same. Boring.

The Black Dahlia Murder hit Rockit Monday (September 1).
