This attempt by will.i.am and his Black Eyed Peas to recoup some shreds of former hiphop cred is a big flop. The list of producers selected to remix pure wackness from the puke-inducing Monkey Business glows on paper: Erick Sermon, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Pro and Jazzy Jeff. Yet they all manage to sound either as if they care so little that they put in zero effort, or, as if they could do nothing to improve the toxic bullshit they had to work with. Falling into the first category is Premier, with a lazy re-diddling of the horrible My Style, featuring Justin Timberlake and Fergie, who annoyingly pants, 'Whussup whussup wit chu, boyyy?' over Preem's signature kicks. Trying his darnedest, Sermon boils up some Doc's Da Name-era Redman funk for Ba Bump -- but will.i.am's ultra-square raps spoil it instantly. Falling somewhere between, Pete Rock's track is a pronounced 'shrug'; not even remixing the featured voice of James Brown can excite him.
