Torontopian Steven Kado may be going to grad school in Cali, but his alter ego, the Blankket, is busy dropping experimental dance discs on this side of the border. The 50th release of DIY heroes Blocks Recording Club (which Kado founded) is about as weird and unsettling as you might expect.
Inspired by Theodor Adorno's frustration with negative-versus-positive dial tracking pioneered during the Rockefeller Foundation's famous Radio Project in 1938 - as the spoonerism in the title suggests - Pegatively Nositive is the musical equivalent of a killer grad thesis; super-smart but inaccessible to 95 per cent of the population. The opener is eight minutes of soft, ringing ambient percussion, while No Rainbows adds too-hot vocals to become a nihilist, anti-modern death chant.
