THE BLUE SEEDS

Rating: NNN

Montreal’s Blue Seeds specialize in that dreamy Valium country that Mazzy Star did so well, or for a local reference, the Cowboy Junkies’ Trinity Sessions album. If you’re into that sound, you’ll enjoy this, because they do that formula well.

Unlike the abovementioned bands, the Blue Seeds add more aggressive flavours to their spacey roots music, as well as some gentle funk elements borrowed from trip-hop. The distorted guitar works best when they’re channelling the Velvet Underground’s loose, fuzzed-out blues, but when they get too close to straight rock it feels misplaced.

The Blue Seeds play the Gladstone Hotel Tuesday (April 22).
